Tourism is one of the driving
forces of the Mauritian economy, the third largest foreign exchange earner,
after sugar and textile. Tourist development started in the early sixties
and gradually became an important part of the Mauritian economy. The Ministry
of Tourism and the Mauritius Touristm Promotion Authority have combined
their efforts to launch the tourist industry and promote Mauritius as
a luxury holiday destination.
With its beautiful beaches, filao trees, and warm people, Mauritius is now among the top holiday resorts. It has much to offer to tourists, making their stay a once a lifetime experience. In such a small island, Mauritius combines wonderful fauna and flora and beautiful landscape. The Mauritian fauna and flora is of the sub-tropical type and has a wide variety of species, some unique to the island. The island is surrounded with coral reefs, creating lagoons with wonderful marine life and sandy beaches. There is approximately 120 miles of coastline, protected by coral reefs. Mauritius is the place to be for tourists looking for an exotic vacation stay and unspoiled natural beauty. Over the past decades, Mauritius has developed an extensive network of hotels to cater for the needs of a wide range of tourists. One can choose from exclusive five-star hotels to small intimate family-owned bungalows. Major international hotel chains have built hotels in choice spots along the coasts of Mauritius. Major hotel groups such as Beachcomber, La Constance Hotels (BELLE MARE PLAGE & LE PRINCE MAURICE) and Sun International have exquisite five-star hotels in various parts of the island.
